Florida had its sights set on defending its BCS title the week after New Years but lost to Alabama in the SEC title game and had to settle for the Sugar Bowl against Cincinnati instead (8:30 p.m. ET, FOX).
The Gators are big 13-point Sugar Bowl favorites at SPORTSBETTING.com, but things aren’t rosy for the boys from the Swamp.
It was revealed recently that head coach Urban Meyer, the man who lead the program to national titles in the 2006 and 2008 seasons, will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from the team after the Jan. 1 bowl game.
Meyer was said to be suffering chest pains after the team’s SEC championship loss, resulting in the announcement. Bettors are going to have to factor in the “win one for the Meyer-meister approach” going into the bowl game against Cincinnati.
The Bearcats also had a coaching loss to deal with, although under entirely different circumstances. Bearcats head coach Brian Kelly left Cincinnati for Notre Dame earlier in December – offensive coordinator Jeff Quinn will coach the team in the Sugar Bowl.
Unlike Florida, Cincinnati will be looking to win in order to spite deserter Kelly.
The total for the Sugar Bowl is set at 57. In the Gators’ last seven games in the month of January, they have produced six overs and one under.
In Cincinnati’s last 15 games when listed as an underdog of any line range, they are 12-3 ATS.
