Sports Interaction betting analyst Frank Doyle discusses yet another good weekend for bettors.
Even though the National Football League always talks about parity, and parity is a cornerstone of its success, there have been periods when parity hasn’t existed. How much parity was there in the 70′s when the Steelers and the Raiders were racking up the big wins?
Parity is the ideal situation, of course, but the real surprise isn’t the absence of parity but that it’s present as often as it is.
It’s not present this year, that’s for sure. The really strong teams in the league – New Orleans, Indy, New England – are pounding the helpless – Tampa Bay, St Louis, Cleveland, Oakland, you know who they are – and bettors are cleaning up.
Sports Interaction is setting big lines on favorites as we try to balance the books, but the massacres are still too much.
For instance, we asked Indy to cover more than two touchdowns on the road at St Louis last weekend. The Colts coasted home by 36. New England -16.5 in old England against Tampa – the Pats win by 28. The only real get-out result we had last weekend was the Giants taking the pipe against Arizona. But otherwise, it was another week for the punter.
Not all the lines are active for this week at time of writing – we don’t know who’ll be quarterback in Detroit and we’re still crunching the numbers from Philly’s win on Monday night. But looking at what is live so far, two things really stand out.
Sports Interaction has only one road favorite this week, which is Houston at Buffalo. Very hard to argue with that, but I’d be studying the weather forecast for Orchard Park before I’d be fully confident of backing the Texans. It gets very cold in Buffalo when that wind blows.
The other striking thing is how many double-digit favorites there are. Chicago -14 after Cincy handed the Bears their hats last weekend. Colts -12.5 against San Francisco. Arizona and New Orleans -10 against Carolina and Atlanta respectively.
Those are big numbers to cover, but the books have no choice but to set them. Bettors are being rewarded as the elite teams run up big scores and the poor teams get hammered like so many nails. The bettors will keep chasing the steam until they see a very good reason to stop.
