Nap time is over for the aging San Antonio Spurs, who had four days off after beating the New Orleans Hornets, 106-92, in the Big Easy on Monday.
In what will be their first of 15 games over the next three and a half weeks, the Spurs return to home court on Friday night to face the Hornets again (9:35 p.m. ET, ESPN).
The Spurs, who have won 10 of the last 11 meetings versus the Hornets at home, are listed as 8-point favorites at SBG Global. The total is set at 197.5.
The Spurs are just barely ahead of Portland in seventh place in the Western Conference standings. And the schedule down the stretch is not going to be easy with games against the Lakers, Boston, Orlando, Atlanta and two against Cleveland.
“We know how tough it’s going to get,” guard Manu Ginobili said. “We really need to improve. If we don’t improve and take a step forward, we can probably not make (the playoffs).”
“It’s going to decide our season,” Tony Parker said. “We have a lot of big games and a lot of back-to-backs. We have a good opportunity. We’ve played pretty well the last two games, so hopefully we can keep it going.”
The Hornets really need a win on Friday – they are five games out of the last playoff spot and would fall below .500 if they lose on Friday.
However, they have not playing well having lost five of their last six. And without Chris Paul, who is still recovering from knee surgery, the Hornets are simply not a playoff contender.
“As a team, I don’t think we have a good rhythm. We’re not playing fluid basketball,” forward David West said, “Basketball is a rhythm game and everybody has to be on the same page as far as feeling good and confident about what we are going out there to do.”
