Books beaten up by football bettors

I’m borderline speechless; this was some week for the public! They can tell their family that gambling paid for their holidays this year.

It started out Monday with Baltimore shutting out the Browns 16-0. The books lost the game and second half big. I’m skipping Tuesday because I don’t even want to get started on college hoops and how bad the lines are.

Wednesday both college chalks, Central Michigan and Buffalo, won to give the public a sweep and really set the books on their heels for the week. Thursday saw a split: the public tabbed Miami on the moneyline over Carolina in NFL and gave that back when Colorado covered against Oklahoma State in college.

Friday was a broom job for the players as Bowling Green, Toledo and Boise all rolled to bury the books and set the stage for even a worse Saturday.

On Saturday, let’s just start with the heavy volume games that landed on the number (which means most players either won or pushed, no losers). Ohio State won by 12, middling the house. By the same magic number, 12, South Florida also middled the books.

Believe it or not, another 12 showed up as Iowa beat Minnesota 12-0, beating the books bad. Lastly, Oregon State winning by 32 also middled the house to pay both sides of that game.

The players gained big wins on Purdue, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Arkansas, Utah, Texas, Houston and Nevada. The books countered with Northwestern, Syracuse, Iowa State, UConn, and Kansas State to minimize the damage.

Sunday was a back and forth day; the house did well on teasers with Pittsburgh and Cincy going down, but got creamed on games such as Indy and San Diego. The entire world bet on the Colts -1 and 1 1/2, and how can you blame them?

The Patriots also did the books no favors by burying the ever-declining Jets.

All in all, it was a great week to be a gambler in football.

Good luck players; talk to you next week!
